Stylist MALIN RUDÉN works as a stylist and knows the fashion scene inside out. At work and privately, she is a constant advocate for sustainable, well-thought-out quality garments.
In collaboration with UNIQLO, Malin has selected some of her favourite knits for fall. Clothes thoughtfully designed with life’s needs in mind. A component of any style.
‘Wear what you feel good and comfortable in, not what others look good in. Use your body shape as a starting point and accentuate what you're most proud of.’
Hey Malin! Who are you?
– That’s what I wonder too! If I could describe myself in five words, I’d say I’m: curious, happy, creative, social and sensitive.
You work as as a stylist, tell us a bit about your profession.
– Yes, I’ve been a stylist for over 20 years now, working with diverse clients such as fashion magazines, clothing brands and advertising agencies. I’ve also done many fashion shows and portraits. I’ve styled everything from princesses to pop stars, politicians and pinups. I’ve traveled all over the world and met people from all walks of life. It’s creative, challenging and no day is the same.
Well, that means you know a lot about how to dress for success, and by that we mean finding your inner comfort. What advice do you have for those who find it difficult to pinpoint their personal style?
– Wear what you feel good and comfortable in, not what others look good in. Use your body shape as a starting point and accentuate what you’re most proud of.
What would you say is your signature style?
– Stylish and minimalistic.
And what does LifeWear mean to you?
– LifeWear is clothes for living. Clothes that are so long-lasting, both in quality and design, that you can wear them your entire life.
I guess your key to great style is basic quality garments?
– Yes, they’re everything. My entire wardrobe consists of quality basics. All my purchases are well thought through and are bought to fulfill a function for many years to come. Good quality is therefore a must.
Malin, if you had a motto in life, what would it be?
– I try to live by: “Never regret what you’ve done, only what you haven’t done.”
‘LifeWear is clothes for living. Clothes that are so long-lasting, both in quality and design, that you can wear them your entire life.’
You live with your husband and two kids in the centre of Stockholm. Describe a great family day for you.
– We wake up together and enjoy a long breakfast. Then we spend the day outdoors, make dinner together later on, and watch a movie. Just being together.
Sounds wonderful. When do you feel flow?
– When there’s a lot going on around me.
And what do you struggle with in life?
– I wouldn’t call it a struggle, but gender stereotypes and prejudices. Injustice. And to be a good mother and role model for my children.
What keeps you evolving?
– Getting to meet new, creative people and hearing their opinions on fashion (and life).
How about the future? What does it hold and what do you wish for?
– Right now, oddly enough, I’m looking forward to my children becoming more independent, so that my husband and I can travel more without being dependent on school holidays. That freedom. To be able to spend more time at our country house in Skåne in the south of Sweden. And to continue working with what I’m passionate about, and with people I’m inspired by.
‘All my purchases are well thought through and are bought to fulfill a function for many years to come. Good quality is therefore a must.’
Any exciting emerging trends that you’d like to share?
– Clearly, we’re back in the 90s – along with Y2K, the early 2000s now. You can see this in that waists have dropped again and skirt lengths are shorter. But rather than immersing ourselves in the grunge aesthetic, we’re cherry picking and embracing minimalism à la Carolyn Bessette Kennedy instead. This is also seen in interior design, movies, and literature. I’d like to believe that we’re distancing ourselves more and more from social media and going back to basics. Vinyl records and analog cameras have become popular again, and I’d like to think fashion magazines and books are too.
Your best tips on beautiful outdoor walking routes in Stockholm during autumn?
– Djurgården, of course! And along Skeppsbron to Moderna Museet and then from Skeppsholmen to Kastellholmen.
Lovely, and what do you wear for your stroll?
– I always dress mainly to feel good, so I would choose an ultra light down relaxed jacket with wide fit jeans and a polo shirt in cashmere underneath.
Thanks, can we ask you – Your five fave places in Stockholm?
– Oh yes!
Schmaltz – my favorite restaurant that breathes Copenhagen.
Djurgården – to breathe.
Galleri CF Hill – because I love art and got to meet Mats Gustavsson here.
Supermercado – I buy olives and Marcona almonds here at wholesale prices.
JUS – because there are few clothing stores with such real fashion knowledge.
