Being a Mother

Small talk

Being a Mother

We met up with SIRI CARLÈN and her three sons BRUNO, OTTO and ALVAR for a walk and talk about family. Siri the artist who puts her soul into a playful, dynamical and colorful way of working. Perhaps it is a result of having grown up and formed her person together with her children. Her proudest life’s work, she says. Siri became a mother in her early 20s and TWWP met with Siri and her tribe of three boys at Sven Harrys Konstmuseum, for a talk about parenthood, support and encouragement.

Being a Mother

Motherhood to me is … Everything. To be both king and slave. Which might match my personality perfectly then haha. To me, my family is my drive to feel good and be good. To be my best, and constantly try to be better. In all categories. Becoming a mother in my early twenties healed me. Gave me direction and purpose. I immediately enjoyed having children. It was somehow self-fulfilling and ego-trippy. For me, having a tiny warm baby close to me has always worked to cure my anxiety. Struggles and doubts came as the children grew up, I suffered severe separation anxiety as they became older. When the children are young you are the center of their world. But now, not so much. It is a painful process to no longer have free access to them. At the same time, it is magical to see them blossom. I find it impossible to separate my private life from my profession, my parenting is a big part of who I am. Sometimes I have thought that it was my salvation, that I would never have pulled myself together and been so driven without the children. They should really be at the top of my resume, because they are without a doubt my proudest piece of work.

If I were to describe myself to others … I would describe myself as the face of extremes. Master of cross throws and cap turns. Mood 0 and 100 but no intermediate positions. Gas or brake. Resistance or laziness. Sometimes terrified, sometimes immortal. Driven or crashed. I’m probably really annoying but also really cute.

Together with … My husband Sebastian Wadsted, we have three children, Otto who is 14, Bruno, 11 years old and Alvar, 9. Me and Seb have known each other since we were little kids. My parents used to have coffee at Café Saturnus, which was his mother’s place. Otto my oldest son is headstrong, kind, stubborn plus the most loyal person on this earth, and Bruno is so cuddly, brilliant, charming, impulsive, and extremely fun to be with. Alvar, my youngest is the world’s kindest, empathetic, creative. Everything he touches turn into gold and he makes everyone around him feel good.

I hope I influence my kids to … Be their best selves, to love themselves and protect their inner drive. For me, it’s important to be true to yourself and the world around you. I hope I have taught them to be warm and caring, to drink tea and to dare to talk about all things. When we go out for a meal … We usually end up at Asian restaurant Tengu, we love their Ramen and Katsu dish. And Seb makes their graphic identity so maybe I’m biased, hehe. For an after school hangout we love Pub Diset’s french fries, and while the kids do their homework, I get a chance to get one small beer in the middle of the week. Perfect setup!

My best cultural experience is … I just saw Sean Scully’s sculptures at Thorvaldsen in Copenhagen. Very nicely curated!

I get positive energy when … I’m fulfilled by a process, at the peak of hyperfocus, then I’m almost high on myself and life. However, it’s usually followed by severe fatigue. Going out for a walk or climbing is the best way to rest my brain and it always puts me in a better mood. When I need to feel good I take a bath.

“I ENCOURAGE OTTO, BRUNO AND ALVAR TO PLAY AROUND WITH CLOTHES, TO SEE WHAT THEY LIKE. I THINK IT’S AMAZING THAT THEY TRY ALL KINDS OF STYLES. THEY INSPIRE AND TRIGGER EACH OTHER, AND ME TOO, A LOT.

LONG-SLEEVED T-SHIRT, CARHARTT. T-SHIRT FROM THE SWEDISH ROCKBAND IMPERIET. WOOL BASE LAYER SET, NÄVA ECOTEXTIL. BOOTS WITH STEEL TOE, VINTAGE/TRETORN.

Style is … To play and a way to be able to show your inside on the outside. To hide or to be seen. Dressing appropriately, or one day over the top and the next blending in. I encourage Otto, Bruno and Alvar to play around with clothes, to see what they like. I think it’s amazing that they try all kinds of styles, and I say yes to almost everything. They inspire and trigger each other, and me too, a lot. No one can make me feel seen like them!

About art … I like visual experiences and when the artist has worked with materials and technology in focus. For me, thoughts and ideas are not the important thing, I like when you feel that someone has cared about their own process. Traditional folk art and crafts from around the world tend to get to me emotionally. I love color, textile, painting, style and pattern. I try to take in with a free mind, and to avoid distinguishing what is “good or bad” culture.

My art makes me feel … Competent.

I love when … Everyone is feeling good. When the ceiling is high, and everyone feels appreciated. No one should reform or be obedient.

This means the world to me … My family and my work.

My favorite words are … Thank you and sorry.

I want to recommend … Being kind and climbing.

The best place in the world is … Nice in France.

My friends … Are my family. Can’t live without them. My family are also my friends. Without them I would be a worse person. They help me navigate, understand and like myself and the values we live by. I want to change … Everything bad to something good. I want to stop worrying about things I have no control over. I hate when there are meaningless unwritten rules or frameworks that don’t fit everyone. I hate injustice in general, and the fact that there are a lot of idiots who take advantage of injustice. This makes me angry, sad and incredibly tired.

My message to people is … Don’t be an egoist.

If I could I would … Crush patriarchy and capitalism.

Next thing I want to do … Is to travel to France by train. There is something peculiar, lingering, concentrated and slow about that way of socializing.

My go-to source of inspiration … The nature. I especially like trees.

What are the best thing about your brothers?
