We travelled with our greek friends who wanted to show us this area of Greece. To get there from Thessaloniki it’s shorter than one hour drive, through beautiful olive tree fields, and the blue Mediterranean Sea on both sides of the road. Traveling when not know what to exactly expect is the most wonderful way.
Afitos, also known as Athitos, is one of the most charming villages in Kassandra, Halkidiki, just 83 km from Thessaloniki. Built on a hillside overlooking the Toroneos Gulf, the village offers breathtaking views of the sea and an atmosphere steeped in tradition. Its stone-built houses with distinctive architecture, picturesque squares, cobblestone alleys, and welcoming taverns create a setting that feels timeless and perfectly in tune with the natural surroundings.
At the heart of Afitos stands the church of St. Demetrius, an impressive monument dating back to 1859, while scattered across the village are elegant mansions and the renowned sculptures of Vassilis Pavlis. Afitos is a place where history, culture, and beauty come together, offering visitors an authentic taste of Halkidiki’s soul.

Our Home away from home:
We stayed at OM Living, a beautiful newly renovated boutique apartment hotel. Nestled in the little village above the sea, the house is pared back yet soulful and peaceful. Natural textures — stone, wood, linen — meet soft minimalism. It’s a retreat for presence. Starting off our days with coffee and a bowl of greek yogurt and honey on the terrace as the village wakes, made us ready for days of adventure and exploring. We travelled with kids and It’s the perfect stay for a family who enjoys quiet luxury, comfort at a reasonable price. Carefully selected furniture, tableware and kitchen goods, it felt like staying a home someone really cares about.

First off, 3 beaches we loved:
There are so many nice beaches in Kassandra, and the first one we fell in love with was Afytos beach, we found it as we walked down the steps from the village, – through narrow streets, bakery’s, little cute shops and tavernas who serves grilled seafood. Note! Go to the left side Varkes Beach, where the fishermen has their boats. You can enjoy food or a glass of wine at the beach taverna, absolutely perfect!
The second – Our family are the most happiest at remote nature beaches, and Possidi Beach ticks all the boxes. At the tip of Kassandra, the land narrows into a golden spit of sand reaching into the sea. On either side, the water shifts in color, one side calm and turquoise, the other wilder, deeper blue. Possidi is less about sunbeds and bars, more about the rawness of nature. The sand stretches far, almost surreal, and depending on the season the cape changes shape with the tides.
And the third beach I’d like to recommend: Drive the science route though the small villages all the way down to the Xenia Beach and Anise Beach Bar. Sunbeds, music and good food. It’s a vibe! Here you can rent kayaks and boats for some exploring on your own, or just kick back in your sunbed for a nap.

What we ate:
All the bakery’s we visited had delicious pastries. The small handmade ice creams you buy on weight, the huge local sugary donought, that you easily can get on the beach, all is really SO good. Don’t miss Lemonis bakery and their pistachio icecream.
Strouboulis Restaurant: Classic greek dishes served in a restaurant in the village. Grilled octopus, seafood, salads and Souvlaki, the atmosphere was excellent.
Philema Afitos: Delicious grilled food, hearty portions, fine wine. Located on a terrace with a a stunning view. The courtyard is really cosy. Share a large platter beef souvlaki with bread.
Mnemes Farm: Hand down, the best dinner we had. It´s a must to visit this restaurant. It’s a 20 min drive from Afytos, and this garden restaurant with local produce is just superb.The atmosphere is family friendly and embracing a boho‑chic ambiance, it reimagines the traditional Greek taverna, enhanced by a rustic farm featuring small animals like chickens and turkeys, providing fresh eggs for the restaurant. We are definitely coming back to this place.
Things to Do — Beyond the Obvious
Snorkeling / Boat excursions: Glide into hidden coves, peer under overhangs, find the small sea creatures
Hiking / coastal trails: Walk cliffside paths in morning or late afternoon light
Village meanderings: Seek local shops of ceramics or olive wood, greet friendly cats, stop at small cafés
Day trips: Use Afytos as a base to visit other parts of Kassandra or even Sithonia (if time allows).
