The beginners guide to hiking the mountains with babies and toddlers

If you follow me on instagram (@emelietorling) , you probably saw that our Sunday did not at all turned out how we planned it too!

Actually planned and planned, we did not plan at all / did not do our research before bringing one baby and one toddler up on the snowy Swiss mountains. Huge amateur moment, HUGE!

(Also is it OK if I write in english on the blog or do you prefer Swedish?)

In the morning I googled up “panoramic Swiss hiking trail” and saw something that looked ok. I made pancakes (yeah, it´s really true, but they leaked sticky jam everywhere so you can breathe out) ,and put on my non-waterproof summer sneakers, cashmere pants, no hat and no nothing, and took the family out for a hike 30 min close by via car.

(Nobody in the fam wore anything different from me in terms of good clothing)

We parked the car, it was so grey, it was foggy and no sunshine what so ever. Saw a few people in full winter outfits, and we laughed and said: ! it´s really not THAT cold. People are always exaggerating. Nerdy. Etc”.

Then, we saw a red fairytale train, and realized that we were going up, up, up. And we did.

I did NOT plan whatsoever, to have a snowball thrown in my face at lunchtime.

I was OK with the snow in my face. Really OK. This day was insane. But we still felt a little bit embarrassed when all the other prepped familys/people went off the train and me an G slided up and almost dropped the stroller because the snow was knee deep and we had cute nike shoes on.

We made it up as you can see, to my great pleasure,  so my first GREAT mountain advice for parents: GET A THULE STROLLER.

(No, this is not an ad.) I say it simply because it´s freakkin amazing. 50+ suncover, waterproof, weights absolutely nothing, turns around 360 degrees so easyyyy with one hand, baby can sleep amazingly well, and best of all: you can really hike a mountain with the thing.

1st MAMA DIAMOND ADVICE FOR HIKING

So, 30 minutes drive from our house, we were high above the clouds.

Gia bia blue had the coziest time cuz she was the only thing that was shockingly and unawarely prepared for the day´s adventure.

Always bring food, diapers, extra pants when they poo through the first par,  a water bottle and warm stuff if you have a baby.

2st MAMA DIAMOND ADVICE FOR HIKING

We had a 360 view of Switzerland and it was powerful, no wind and sunny.

Anaïs was so happy and probably had a snowball the size of a snowman´s head for pre-lunch. She was not happy though because she did not have thermal pants or winter boots, but she jumped around in the knee deep snow anyway and got super-cold and super-wet.

If you have a toddler, always bring an extra set of clothes, no matter where you go.

3st MAMA DIAMOND ADVICE FOR HIKING

My little nugget. She had the best time too.The very best thing about the day was that we had no idea what we were going to see. That made it even better. Carpe carpe carpe.

Hope you feel that you can pull a hiking off now after all my amazing advice. #foolproof

love x
